Why should you use plain English? One in four can't understand. Yes that's right. In 1997 an international adult literacy survey estimated that 24% of adults in Northern Ireland perform at the lowest levels of literacy competence. The National Adult Literacy Agency in the Republic of Ireland claims that a quarter of Irish adults have very low literacy skills. In Britain about 8.4 million adults have trouble filling in a form correctly, working out sales bargains or following a recipe. Modern literacy is not defined merely as the ability to read and write. It relates to whether a person is able to understand and use printed information in daily life, at home, at work and in the community. It's estimated that soon 40% of Internet users will be people with low literacy levels. That's why it's so important to use plain language. We are members of PLAIN, the Plain Language Association International. It promotes standards and practices in the plain language profession. We're fully behind the movement and its goal of making written information clear and easy to read, for everyone. The worldwide plain English movement is on the side of the reader and the consumer. Organisations that embrace plain English are on their side too. They usually have better relations with clients and customers and better public relations.
